The clinic had been working "clandestinely" for at least a year. 13 JANUARY - Italy: Rome - Abortion RP Secretary Gianfranco SPADACCIA is arrested, and a warrant issued for the arrest of Adele FACCIO, leader of the MLD, who gave herself up on 25 January during a joint Radical and MLD conference. (INR348). They were charged with "procuring abortion," after declaring that they were jointly responsible for the activities of the Clinic in Florence. They were released on 10 February. MARCH/APRIL/JUNE - Italy - Abortion, Media The Lega XIII Maggio and the weekly LEspresso begin collecting signatures on the referendum to make abortion legal. During the campaign for the referendum LEspresso dedicates a weekly page to Marco Pannella. (INR358) Emma BONINO, joint head of the CISA, is detained by the police for a number of days. SUMMER - Italy - Antiprohibitionism Marco PANNELLA smokes a joint during a press conference in favour of a law on drugs. He is arrested. From jail he rallies his "troops" to obtain the discussion, by Parliament, of an existing bill that, among other things, made the personal consumption of drugs non-punishable. He refuses to ask for bail until the President of the Senate and the Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies guarantee that the drug reform law will be discussed and put to the vote within four months. A few months later the law was to be approved. 9 SEPTEMBER - Italy: Florence - Abortion Dr. CONCIANI and seven CISA activists are arrested again. NOVEMBRE - Italy: Florence - XV RP CONGRESS Various antimilitarist objectives include: "...participation in the international antimilitarist Verdun march." (NR no. 46 p. 2) The speech that Pier Paolo Pasolini, murdered in Ostia (near Rome) on 2 November, was to have delivered at the Radical Congress is read to a deeply-shocked public. "...you dont have to do anything else (I think) except simply to go on being yourselves; which means continuing to be undefinable. Immediately forgetting great achievements, and continuing, undaunted, to stubbornly contest everything, to make demands, to impose your will, to identify with that which is "different," to shock people, to curse." Elected organs Secretary: Gianfranco SPADACCIA Treasurer: Paolo VIGEVANO 21 NOVEMBER - Italy: Rome - Antimilitarism In St. Peters Square, twenty Radical activists distribute leaflets against the ceremony of reconciliation, held as part of the Jubilee celebrations, during which representatives of the armies and juntas of Chile, Argentina, the Philippines and Spain were received by the Pope. The activists were detained for more than 6 hours at the nearby police station. Subsequently, seven other Radicals were arrested and charged with resisting arrest, and insulting and defaming the Catholic religion. (APR no. 1670 - 7.2.76) In the days that followed numerous Radical activists, including the Secretary Spadaccia and the President Adele FACCIO, continued to demonstrate, without police intervention, until those who had been arrested were released, on 24 November. |
