Modern history researcher at the University of Milan. A campaigner for the Radical Party's re-consctruction. In 1966 he was arrested for having distributed an antimilitarist flyer during the Armed Forces Parade. This action, for which Lorenzo Strik Lievers was committed for trial and found not guilty, was responsible for raising the question of the individual's right to conscientious objection amongst the electorate. He was President of the Federal Council in 1983
