The "Who's Who" of the Transnational Radical Party

Antonio STANGO

Born in Naples, Italy, he has been living in several European countries and in Central Asia. He is the founder ((in 1987) and the Secretary General of the Italian Helsinki Committee, member of the International Helsinki Federation For Human Rights (http://italianhelsinkicommittee.blog.kataweb.it).

From 2003 is a member of the Board of Directors of Hands Off Cain. After starting a military career, in 1979 he decided to join the Radical Party to take part in its campaigns for civil rights. In 1984 was elected in its Federal Council; from 1985 to 1995 he was a member of its political Secretariat. Since 1981 he has been devoted mainly to human rights activities, organizing many international conferences, editing specialized reviews, participating in missions to conflict zones and conducting nonviolent actions – among else, in January 1987 in Poland against the military regime of Jaruzelski and to defend Solidarnosc; in June 1989, together with Leonid Pliusc, an exiled Ukrainian dissident, near the Wall of Berlin in East Germany in favor of freedom and democracy; in August of that year on Pushkin square in Moscow for the restoration of the independence of the Baltic States on the 50th anniversary of the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact. He has been the founder and editor-in-chief of "La Nuova Frontiera" (International Human Rights and Security Review) and of the "Osservatorio sulla proliferazione delle armi e delle tecnologie militari" (Arms & Military Technologies Proliferation Watch). As a human rights activist and a journalist, he was in the center of events during the Romanian revolution in 1989, and worked in the warfare zone in Kurdistan (1992) and in Chechnya (1995). From 1991 to 1996 he coordinated several initiatives in the Baltic States and the Russian Federation. In 1995-1996 he has been the Treasurer of No Peace Without Justice. A lecturer in International Law and Human Rights, from 2002 to 2003 has been working on human rights education projects for the Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Network. From 2003 to July 2006 he has been living in Kazakhstan as the Project Director of Freedom House’s Kazakhstan Human Rights Support Program. He organized and delivered training sessions on human rights in Italy, Lebanon, Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan.
