The "Who's Who" in the Transnational Radical Party

Emilio VESCE

Born in 1939. A former member of the Chamber of Deputies, elected on the Radical Party list.

Emilio is a philosophy graduate. On 7 April 1979 he was arrested and charged with belonging to an armed gang, subversion and armed insurrection against the State. He was convicted and sentenced to 13 years' imprisonment, before being pardoned after having served five years, five months and five days of his term in special prisons. In 1987 he was elected to Parliament as a Radical candidate. He is at the present time an Antiprohibitionist councillor of the Veneto region.

Among the founding members in 1989 of the Verdi Arcobaleno list, he was elected as a member of the Regional Council of the Veneto, on the anti-prohibitionist list, in 1990.

When the "Movimento dei Club Pannella di lotte civili, ambientaliste e per la riforma" was established in 1992, he was a member of the Organising Committee. At the 36th Radical Party Congress in 1993, he was elected as a member of the General Council. After the outbreak of war in the former Yugoslavia, he travelled several times to Croatia, meeting representatives of the Croatian Parliament and attempting to create a cross-party lobby of members of the Radical Party. In Zagreb and Split he organised assemblies on the issues of AIDS and anti-prohibitionism.

In 1993 he was part of the Executive Council of the new Radical association "Hands Off Cain - Parliamentary Campaign for the Abolition of the Death Penalty by the Year 2000". In 1994 he took over as Head of Social Policy in the Regional Council of the Veneto.

Within the Council he promoted the Radical campaign for the establishment of an International Criminal Court.

In November 2000, after a heart attack, he fell into an irreversible coma. For six months he was kept alive artificially. In an open letter dated May 2001, Marco Pannella promised to find a way to put an end to the "atrocious suffering", caused by "excessive therapeutic zeal", of Emilio Vesce and his family. Vesce died on 12 May 2001.
